primary vs secondary socialization
primary is the socialization that happens during childhood
secondary is the socialization that occurs later in life
socialization
the lifelong learning process of learning how to be a social person in society that brings about a changes in a persons sense of self
determinism
the degree to which an individuals personal characteristics are determined by something physical
nature(biological) vs nurture(society or culture)
biological determinism
the idea that we are who we are based on genes ex. if you’re good at sports its because you are genetically predisposed
sigmund freud
thought both biological and social factors shape personality
human mind has 3 parts:id, superego, ego
id
unconscious or instinctive drives eros-pleasure seeking
thanatos- violence, aggression, death wish
superego
part of the mind that polices the id(conscience) the moral messages created by social interaction
ego
the main part of personality its driven by the id and restrained by the superego

-thought about the influence society has on ego into old age
-believed that each stage of life is defined by a central crisis that impacts individual development
-ex. trust vs mistrust, intimacy vs isolation, etc.
behaviourism
-a school of thought in psychology that takes a strong cultural determinist position
-power of learning in behaviour development
-most of what/who we are is determined based on how previous behaviour was responded to
agents of socialization
groups that have significant impact on ones socialization
ex. peers, family, media, school,etc
significant others
key individuals who young individuals imitate and model themselves after
generalized others
the general expectations and viewpoints of the society in which a child is socialized
charles cooley
-a symbolic interactionist that introduced the looking glass self as an explanation of how the self develops
-self image viewed as how others see an individual
looking glass self
split int three parts
-how you imagine you appear to others
-how you imagine those others judge your appearance
-how you feel as a result(proud,embarassed, etc.)
