Deviance
to stray from the norm, deviance is socially constructed as is the “norm”
Essentialism
the view that there is something universal about or objective about characteristics like the norm and deviance
Overt vs Covert deviance
overt: things within an individuals control that explicitly violate the norm(fashion, music)
vs
covert:things you can’t control that could make a group a target(race, gender, sexual orientation)
examples of deviance and race
assimilation- forcing a group into the “right” way of thinking culturally making a group similar to the dominant culture
Racial profiling- the assumption that an individuals physical characteristics(race) can predict activities
racialization of deviance- making ethnic or racial background a covert characteristic.
examples of gender as deviance
misogyny- the hatred or prejudice against women and girls due to the normalization of male behaviours and values being normalized
Patriarchal construct-the structures in society that favour boys and men over women and girls economically, socially, and historically
examples of class as deviance
impression management- the control of flow of info to control the way in which people see and treat you
social resource- the ability to understand and have knowledge of the legal system and afford a good lawyer (lower class crime statistics)
examples of disability as deviance
forced sterilization-individuals or groups being forced into sterilization for the prospect of “societal health”
eugenics-movements based falsely on the idea that intelligence can be measured and that it is passed down, often targeted indigenous women
Stigma
An attribute that is used an excuse to disgrace an individual often labeling the trait or individual as “other’,”different”, or “less than”
bodily stigma
physical or visible characteristics(scars, disabilities)
moral stigma
perceived moral failings- criminal, addiction, mental disorders
tribal stigma
specific social groups-racial or ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals
moral panic
occurs when an individual or group is labeled other and also characterized as a threat creating mass panic and exaggerated reaction
moral entrepreneurs
anyone who benefits from moral panic (journalists)
folkway
etiquette norms, that govern day to day matters and come with weak sanctions
