Socialization
The lifelong process through which an individual acquires a self identify and learns the physical, mental, and social skills that are needed to be productive citizen
Agents of socialization
People or institutions that guide or influence an individual social development
Primary agent - family
Secondary agent – school, media, workplace, religion
Primary agent
The means by which an individual learns the basic values and norms of society during childhood
– Family teaches children, the difference between right and wrong, proper behaviour (example manners), and gender rules through praise and punishment, direct orders, stories, and unconscious actions as role models
Secondary agent
The means by which an individual learn further social values and norm
– School introduces children, to adult authority and leadership (other than parents/grandparents/guardians), provides an opportunity for children to interact with their peers (who become increasingly influential during adolescence), and has become a more important agent than in the past because everyone has access to public education, and children attend school for a longer period of time and begin at a younger age.
– Media, reinforces, portrayal of gender rules, and has become more influential; not all forms of media allow the individual to have influence over the message being delivered (example television)
– Overtime, the influence of the workplace has increased while the influence of religion has declined
