Psychological development
– Personality development is a lifelong process with important decisions to be made at each stage
– Each stage of the ego development involves the individual maturing, psychological characteristics, and social context of the time
– The individual must complete one stage at a time
– People pass through the stages at different rates
– A compromise between continual growth and freuds ideas
– Suggested psychological stages that characterized development from the beginning to the end of life
– Each stage has different kinds of problems to face different types of significant relationships and various possible outcomes

12–18 (puberty – adolescence) identity or role confusion

Peer group
– A group of people of similar age and status within whom a person interacts socially
Reference group
A group of people one mentally refers to when needing a solution to a problem
Identity crisis
The period during adolescence when an individual is trying to answer the questions: who am I? And where am I going in order to form their own identity separate from their peers. a time to clarify, interest, abilities, values, strengths, weaknesses.
Identity confusion
Results when an individual has not formed a strong personal identity and remains dependent on peers
