Communication
- a complex process that involves sending and receiving a message
- most effective when the message has the impact on the receiver that was intended by the sender
Communication process
1) a message is received
2) the message is processed according to the individuals frame of reference which includes family, friends, culture, religion, education, beliefs, habits, interests, desires, needs, etc.
3) a message is sent in response - this feedback may be verbal or non verbal
Goals of communication
1) physical needs to survive (i.e. Food, shelter, safety)
2) social needs to belong (i.e. strengthening social bonds by supporting and teaching)
3) ego needs to feel good about self and behaviour (i.e. acceptance and approval as an individual)
Types of communication
1) Non verbal communication (93%)
2) verbal communication (7%)
Non verbal communication
- used to enhance a verbal message
• body language: posture, facial expressions, eye movements, gestures.
• tone of voice ( saying something with a different attitude, sarcastic)
• physical space - a distance established for both casual and formal communication - depends on culture, situation, and individual
- closer = comfortable emotional relationship
- farther = distant emotional relationship
• Objects - used as cues or props (furniture)
• touch - can convey a great deal of information
• smell (different perfume scents)
• symbols - objects, words, actions that represent something else (writing, drawing, colours, shapes, jewelry, clothing)

Barriers to effective communication
- one way communication
- inadequate vocabulary
- inattention
- emotional blocks
- bias
- jargon
- slang
One way communication
(No questions)
- without feedback it is difficult to adjust the language or the message accordingly
Inadequate vocabulary
(The thingy over there, swearing)
- inability to express thoughts with words leads to difficulty in communicating
Inattention
(Distracted)
- preoccupation interferes with the communication process
Emotional blocks
(In the moment)
- the feeling or the mindset of one of the communicators can effect how the message is interpreted
Bias
(Predetermined)
- preconceived opinions of people affect how the message is interpreted
Jargon
(Grand slam -baseball)
- highly specialized, technical, or complicated language often hides communication
- usually understood within (but not outside) of the group
Slang
- a special language used by a particular social group
- saves time (shorthand) ; provides a more precise reference or description, reinforces and maintains group solidarity
