Socialisation Flashcards
At what point can we engage caregivers?
At just 3 months old we can engage with our caregivers- we can cry when we experience discomfort.
What does Wunder contribute to the process of socialisation?
Later on we learn language, norms and values through our social groups and caregivers.
What is the first stage of socialisation and what is associated with it?
Primary socialisation- associated with family and the school setting because we are constantly learning new skills, attitudes and behaviours.
What stage comes after Primary socialisation and what is associated with it?
Secondary socialisation- associated with a wide range of settings including higher education, work and self exploration.
What is seen to be the purpose of socialisation?
To internalise social restrictions and prohibitions that are in contradiction to our personal desires.
What does Cosaro contend about the purpose of socialisation?
It’s not just about the internalisation and adaptation, but also about appropriation, reinvention and reproduction of norms, values, attitudes and behaviours.
Who supports Cosaro’s view point and why?
Goffman- argues if you view socialisation as dramaturgy you can clearly see the 3 stages of socialisation; context, content and process and finally potential outcomes.
