Freudian Psychology- Psychoanalysis Flashcards
Define self concept
the totality of an individual’s thoughts and feelings about her/himself
What did Freud study
the difference between the unconscious and conscious
What did Feud believe?
we all have a hidden self where we repress our instincts sexual or otherwise. Freud perceives the self as the tip of the iceberg of subjectivity which can be broken into 3 main areas
What are the 3 areas Freud identified
Ego, Superego and Id
The ego is otherwise known as what?
the conscious self, or the sane and rational mental life .
The ego is perceived as what?
a set of psychological processes that control consciousness, or purposive motivated behaviour.
Ultimately what is the ego?
the core that controls and drives personality and represents the conscious awareness and the subjective experience of the individual
What does the superego do/
mediates between the ‘ego’ and the ‘id’
how is the superego described?
as the organised part of the personality structure which is mainly, but not entirely unconscious
what does the superego include?
the individual’s ideals, spiritual goals and conscience that criticises and prohibits one’s drive, fantasies, feelings and actions
Ultimately what does the superego do?
directs the individual to act in a socially appropriate manner by controlling our sense of right, wrong and guilt
what is the id otherwise known as ?
our unconscious
what does the id primarily consist of?
primarily consist of feelings and sensations that we have repressed.
How did Freud describe the id?
that ‘id is the dark, inaccessible part of our personality’
what else does the id consist of?
all those wishes which are repressed by the demands of everyday life and reality and in particular the repressed desires of infancy.
