What is the definition of identity and who defined it?
Jenkins- ‘The human capacity to know who is who and hence what is what;.
What did Wentworth define and what is the definition?
Socialisation- the way in which each individual becomes fully human or a person.
What did Durkheim define and what is the definition?
Socialisation- A process that determines the way individuals internalise values, attitudes, norms and how they interact within socio-cultural settings
What did Rosenberg explain?
The self- arises out of social experience and interaction- it incorporates and is influenced by the individuals location in the social structure; its formed within institutional systems; it’s constructed from the materials of the culture and is affected by immediate social and environmental contexts
Who supports Rosenberg and what do they explain?
Blumstein- the self- even if the self can be part of the mechanics that motivate the actors behaviour, the self finds expression in behaviour during interaction because we project our identity through interaction.
Who and what explains what the social self is?
Burkitt- There is no individual self, but rather a social self because we are born into our social relations that we do not choose. Therefore the selves we become are formed according to family, neighbourhood, social class, gender, ethnicity, beliefs and values in which we are educated.
