What is socialisation?
Socialisation is the process by which we learn our culture to become skilled members of society.
Socialisation is carried out by who?
Agencies of socialisation (people and groups who influence others behaviours such as teachers, families, religion and media). It is socially transmitted from one generation to the next and plays a crucial role in the forming of identities.
What are the 2 stages of socialisation?
Primary socialisation
Secondary socialisation
What is primary socialisation?
Happens during the early years of life, mostly within the institution of the family.
How do children learn the first stages of socialisation?
Your parents/guardians are mainly responsible for this type of learning experience. Children imitate them and copy what they see/hear. They learn from the reactions of each other, eg when they do something wrong they get told off and realise that action was inappropriate.
What are some of the important things learnt from primary socialisation?
Talking/speech
manners
walking
eat/drink
toilet training/Hygiene
How can the media reinforce gender socialisation? (magazine cover)
Women is presented with her full body/man just his face
the mans pose makes him look more powerful/intimidating however the women is posing. ‘male gaze’ - viewed as more of an object
What are some ways society create gender role socialisation?
Childhood, such as children’s clothing and toys and how people are tret in school.
What is gender discrimination and how might it exist in the workplace?
The idea that males are more powerful then women, a patriarchal society is a male dominated world.

‘glass ceiling’ - women being limited to how much they can achieve in the workplace, cannot clime up to top roles like a manager.
the statement ‘career women’ or ‘hands on dad’ make it as women should stay at home.
