What was enclosure
Putting a fence around a field so that either one crop could be produced on a lager scale or the field could be used for livestock

Pastoral farming was more profitable than arable farming . Cloth trade one of the most lucrative and popular trade

Deprived villagers of land for their animals, especially if they didn’t rent the land themselves

What was engrossing?
Joining together of several farms to make one unit, usually the process of one farmer buying up the land of the others.
Why was engrossing unpopular?
Led to families being evicted

Why were their regional differences in agriculture?
Londoners tend to look down upon northerners for their perceived savagery,while northerners were envious of southern riches.
South and east=roughly 3/4 of the population lived there. Mixed farming was used in densely populated areas of the south east.
North and west= sparsely populated areas, pastoral farming was most common

90 percent of farmers

Owned and work on their own lands
What is subsistence farming?
Grow crops and raise livestock to feed themselves, no surplus to sell for profit
