Henrys Control Over The Regions Flashcards
Wales
Was not a military frontier zone like Ireland
Did not include any of the ‘super nobles’ that he feared. Therefore, he appointed jasper tudor, his uncle to govern it n in 1493 placed his infant son Arthur in charge of the council.
Familial links with wales, which were highlighted and celebrated by native poets n writers= ensured support of population.
Ireland
His power in Ireland only extended as far as the pale.
Dominant figure in Ireland was the earl of Kildare, was feared by Henry bc he had Yorkist sympathies, sus was reinforced when he crowned simnel king of Ireland 1486. This sus was further compounded when he supported warbeck. Welcomed him to Ireland 1491.
His actions forced Henry into action, he attempted a costly approach of rule of the pale by appointing his infant son prince henry as viceroy of Ireland n appointed sir Edward poyning as his lord deputy. Passed poynings law in 1495 which meant that the Irish parliament could pass no law without prior approval of the English crown. Too expensive, problem was worsened when warbeck returned to Ireland in 1495, Henry short on money due to threat of invasion by the Scot’s,was forced to recall poynings and depend on cheap option of using Kildare as his deputy.
Why was Ireland a success at the end?
By 1496, Kildare decided that there was no benefit in supporting the Yorkist cause any longer + served Henry loyally.
By around 1500, Henry had secured some level of peaceable n cheap authority over Ireland = difference to before where he relied on the cheap but unreliable Irish aristocracy.
The fact that Kildare was able to use his office to rebuild his family’s fortunes doubtless made him eager to support his former enemy.
