Social support and LOC AO1 Flashcards
What is social support?
People can resist pressures to conform or obey when they receive social support. This is because having an ally gives us confidence and support making it possible to resist the pressures and remain independent in our behaviour
What is resisting conformity?
The individual must identify with the ally and see them as a role model of independent behaviour in order to resist conforming. Those who have support for their view no longer fear being ridiculed, allowing them to avoid NSI.
What is resisting obedience?
The ally acts as a model of dissent for the individual to copy, and this free’s the person to resist obedience and act from their own conscience.
What is diffusion of responsibility?
The individual will feel less responsible for their actions if there are others who are acting the same way, so the consequence of resisting is shared
What is locus of control?
It is a personality trait which refer’s to a person’s perception of personal control over their behaviour.
What is internal LOC?
Individuals believe they control what happens to them and their behaviour is caused by their own personal decisions and effort and trust their own judgement more than others
What are those with a strong internal LOC more likely to do?
More likely to remain independent in their behaviour snd rely less on the opinions of others, which means they are more able to resist social influence
What is external LOC?
Individuals believe what happens to them is determined by external factors such as luck or fate and put more trust into the judgement of authority figures.
What are individuals with an external LOC less likely to do?
Less likely to take personal responsibility for their actions and are less likely to remain independent in their behaviour so are less able to resist social influence
