Social support Flashcards
Who conducted RTS?
Albrecht
What did Albrecht do ?
He evaluated an 8 week program to help pregnant adolescents resist peer pressure to smoke
Who was social support provided by?
A slightly older mentor or ‘buddy’
What did Albrecht find?
It was found that those who has a buddy were significantly less likely to smoke than those without a buddy - making it a valid and useful explanation as it can be used as part of intervention in the real world
What may critics argue about an ally?
The ally may not be seen as credible and if they aren’t then the individual will not identify with them and will be less likely to join them in resisting social influence - lowering the validity
Who was further RTS conducted by?
Milgram
What did Milgram do?
In one of his variations, the real ppt was paired with two additional confederates who refused to go on and withdrew from the experiment
What did Milgram find?
The participants who proceeded to the full 450V dropped to 10% from 65% - if they have support, they are more likely to resist obedience
