“The Holy Experiment” (middle)

A

A bunch of people called quakers that believed everyone is equal under the eyes of god. Issued a charter because the quakers were being hanged → creation of pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was a holy experiment because William Penn wanted to model religious freedom and peace.

A

At first slavery was forbidden meaning that people could not work in large farms → settlement grew slavery → changed law to slavery being legalSlaves relied on a large population.
Middle passage: harsh ship condition meaning barely any space 10% of slaves died during voyage
Slave codes: Set of rules denied enslaved people basic human rights
Quakers: did not want slavery bc they believed everyone is equal in the eyes of god
