- Constructed buildings and tombs
- Held priesthoods
- Julia Felix (local elite) independant wealthy woman

- Freedmen could become wealthy and bought their own slaves e.g. wax tablet shows that Freedwoman Poppaea Note has slaves of her own
Men:
- Voted in elections
- Own business
- Could not hold formal political office
Women:
- Own businesses
- Participate in Commerce
- Could nothold formal political office
- Some worked for former masters

- Little evidence of their lives
- Slave quaters within main house, few had seperate
- Sold in business transcations on wax tablets
- Manumission was common = freed, or purchase freedom
- Ex slaves could not be citizens, kids could
