Pre-roman (Samnite)

A
  • Limestone and volcanic tufa
  • Monumental doorways
  • Internal walls made of rubble mixed with mortar with plaster over
  • Considerable Greek influence
  • Wall paintings in the ‘first style’ imitate colourful stones which were common in wealthy houses
  • Austere large but not intricate or luxurious
  • Atrium (first room)
  • Pillars to show depth

  • Paintings in 2nd style create illusion of depth in landscape scenes
  • More ornate (House of Labrinth)
  • House of silver Wedding had private baths and private water supply

  • Ornamental structure devided space into broad areas of colour and use of grand paintings
  • Moves away from illusionism, images more flat, architecture is unrealistic (House of Jason)
  • Renewed focus on gardern (peristyle, House of Gilded cupids
  • Atrium Peristyle house (entrance with garden centre of house)
