what is a caste system
An extreme system of inequality in which people inherit their status
what is status inconsistency
the mismatch between ones position in one hierarchy with a position occupied in another
what is absolute poverty
a household income is below a level that makes it difficult for the family to meet basic needs of life

a person lacks access to many good needed for living
what is relative poverty
poverty in relation to the economic status of other members of a society
what is the modernization theory
- asserts that it is the people of poor societies who lack ration business style techniques
- these nations lack in a stable democratic form of government also do not have a shared mentality that values hard work
what is the dependency theory
the idea that valuable resources flow from a periphery of poor countries to a core group of wealthy and powerful countries
what are some barriers from closing the digital divide and making internet access more open
- Less developed countries do not have the infrastructure required to make ICT services affordable to their citizens
- language barrier, important for building online connections
- educational attainment, countries with highly educated populace are more likely to have higher levels of ownership in computer technology
what are life chances
the extend to which people have access to important scarce resources like food, clothing, shelter education, etc.

what is an ascribed status
Given to you, cannot be changed (ideally)
what is an achieved status
you have control over (ideally) , entirely based on your actions, “achieved” can also mean moving downward (Ex. achieving poverty)
what are the four things we must believe in order to support our social stratification
- People should compete for stuff (value)
- People should be rewarded for hard work
- People will be rewarded for hard work (belief about fact)
- Failure is your own fault
