Social Stratification
a societal system to categorize its people in rankings based on their socio economic status, and factors like wealth, race, income, education and power. It refers to the layers made of people due to these factors
Global Stratification
compares the wealth, economic stability, status and power of all the countries around the world, it highlights worldwide patterns and social inequality
Feminization of Poverty
acknowledges the disproportionality that women face regarding lower income and problems this causes.
Caste System
Where scarce resources and social rewards are distributed on the basis of ascribed statuses.
Exogamy
Marriage outside one’s own social category
Endogamy
Marriage within one’s own social category
Bourgeoisie
a class of people who fall somewhere between the lowest and highest classes, middle class
Socioeconomic Status (SES)
Combines social factors such as educational level, occupational prestige, and place of residence with the economic factor of income, used to determine an individual’s relative position in the stratification system
Reputational Method
Individuals in the community are asked to rank other community members based on what they know of their characters and lifestyles
Objective Method
Sociologists define social class by income, occupation and education
Subjective Method
Individuals are asked to determine their own social rank.
