Cultural Deviance Theory
is a branch of social structure theory that sees strain and social disorganization together resulting in a unique lower-class culture that conflicts with conventional social norms.
Differential Association Theory
If you interact frequently, for a long time, and in an intense manner with those who support deviance, you will also engage in deviance.
Labeling Theory
Assumes that the term deviance is relative. It is the reaction of others that defines a behavior as deviant.
“Self-Fulfilling Prophecy”
Power Elite Model
A small number of powerful individuals, especially corporate, political, religious, or military leaders, who hold the highest positions of authority in their respective institutions and share a common outlook and values.
Primary Deviance
an initial rule-breaking act performed by an otherwise socially compliant individual.
Secondary Deviance
Secondary deviance refers to a deviant behavior that is a result of being publicly labeled as deviant and treated as an outsider.
Social Disorganization Theory
This influences a community’s capacity to develop and maintain strong systems of social relationships.
Strain Theory
Views deviance as natural outgrowth, norms and structure of society
Recidivism
Returning to criminal behavior, particularly after incarceration.
Innovation
People accept the culture goals of society but do not reach them through culturally acceptable means
Rebellion
Person tries to overthrow the system and replace it with new goals and means
Ritualism
Person accept the culturally approved means but forget the goals
Retreatism
Person rejects both goals and means
Attachment Disorder
States that there is a bond between the individual and conventional society. The stronger the bond, the less likely that the person will deviate from the others.
