prejudice
“prejudgment” an unjustifiable attitude toward a group and its members. often directed toward different cultural, ethnic, or gender groups.
in group bias
the tendency to favor one’s own group in which they share a common identity.
scapegoating
a group is unfairly blamed for something they didn’t do.
just-world phenomenon
tendency to believe the world is just, and therefore people must get what they deserve and deserve what they get (big fish- just VS small fish- unjust)
- attraction- proximity
geographic nearness is a powerful predictor of friendship. repeated exposure to novel stimuli increases their attraction
- attraction- similarity
similar views among individuals causes the bond of attraction to strengthen
- attraction- physical attractiveness
once proximity affords contact, the next most important thing in attraction is physical appearance.
altruism
unselfish regard for the welfare of others
social relations
social psych teaches us how we relate through prejudice, aggression and conflict, to attraction, altruism and peacemaking.
prejudice components
beliefs (stereotypes), emotions (hostility, envy, fear), predisposition to act (discriminate)
prejudice roots
social inequalities, social divisions, emotional scapegoating
bystander effect
tendency of any given bystander to be less likely to give aid if other bystanders are present.
