what constitutes a psych disorder?
deviant, distressing, dysfunctional

something in one culture may be considered normal, while others it may lead to arrest (going naked)
distress
must accompany the deviant behavior

clearly a disorder
medical model
used to review the physical causes of disorders.
bio-psycho-social perspective
assumes that biological, socio-cultural, and psychological factors combine and interact to produce psychological disorders.
diagnosis- DSM IV
argues that labels may stigmatize individuals
diagnosis- benefits and problems
- labeling: helpful when communicating with professionals- stigmatisms
- self-fulfilling prophecy:
anxiety disorders- phobias
marked by a persistent irrational fear of an object or situation accompanied by avoidance.
anxiety disorders- OCD
persistence of unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and urges to engage in senseless, ritualistic behavior (compulsions) that cause distress.
PTSD
4 or more weeks of these symptoms constitute PTSD:
- flashbacks, nightmares, social withdrawal, jumpy anxiety, sleep problems.
Mood disorders- depression
- depression is the “common cold” of psychological disorders.
- occurs when signs of depression last 2 weeks or more and are not due to drugs or medical conditions.
- signs: lethargy and fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, loss of interest/ pleasure and motivation, sleep or appetite disturbance.
mood disorders- bipolar disorder
- alteration between depression and mania.
- many creators suffered from this; creativity spiked during manic phase, but not in depressed phase.
suicidality risks and signs
- history of attempts/ gestures
- feelings of hopelessness
- preoccupation with suicide
- giving away possessions
- recent loss
- physical problems
- substance use
schizophrenia
- 1/100 suffer from it
- strikes young people as they mature into adults
- symptoms: disorganized and delusional thinking, disturbed perceptions, inappropriate emotions and actions.
