behavior therapies Flashcards
A. focus and purpose
- applies learning principles to the elimination of unwanted behavior
- to treat phobias or sexual disorders, they do not delve deep below the surface to look for inner causes
B. desensitization
type of exposure therapy that associates a pleasant, relaxed state with gradually increasing anxiety-triggering stimuli commonly used to treat phobias.
C. in vivo exposure
type of exposure therapy involving directly confronting a feared object or situation irl
D. flooding
exposing a person to feared stimuli without attempting to lessen anxiety first.
techniques
- counterconditioning: conditions new responses to stimuli that trigger unwanted behaviors
- based on classical conditioning including exposure therapy, systemic desensitization, and aversive conditioning.
exposure therapy
expose patients to things they fear and avoid through repeated exposures- this lessens anxiety because they get used to it
aversive conditioning
type of counterconditioning that associates an unpleasant state with an unwanted behavior.
- ex: drug/alcohol causing nausea
operant conditioning
enables therapists to use behavior modification in which desired behaviors are rewarded and undesired behaviors are either ignored or punished.
