Minority influence
A form of social influence where people reject the established norm of the majority group and move to the position of the minority
Social influence
How we are influenced by others, either by a group or an individual to change your behaviour, thinking and or attitudes
Obedience
A type of social influence whereby somebody acts in response to a direct order from a figure with perceived authority
Compliance
Changes his or her own behaviour to fit in with the group
They may not necessarily agree with the behaviour/belief but they go along with it publicly
It is not a permanent form of social influence, it lasts only as long as the group is present
Identification
Conforms publicly as well as privately
The change if behaviour or belief is often temporary
It has elements of internalisation and compliance
Internalisation
The behaviour or belief is accepted by the individual and becomes part of their own belief system
Most permanent form of conformity, it lasts even when the majority is not present
Change both publicly and privatly
Conformity
A form of social influence that results from exposure to the majority position and leads to compliance with that position. People adopt the behaviour, attitudes and values if other members of a reference group or change their own.
