define social psychology
the study of how we think about, influence, and relate to one another
what is attribution theory?
people behave a certain way for a reason. the things we do are not random
what is the fundamental attribution theory?
when looking at behavior we like to overestimate a person’s disposition and underestimate their situation
what are the different types of conformity?
informative: thinking other people are right
normative: want to come across as normal so you go against your own opinion and agree
How did the Ashe video show what influence whether we conform?
Why do people conform?
we don’t like to stand out, we would rather go against what we believe, and feel like we fit in.
what is the Milgram obedience study and what did it tell us about obedience?
how does being in a group influence our behavior?
we like to fit in, so we are willing to conform to be liked by others
what is group polarization and why are we seeing increases?
when we spend extensive time with like-minded people our opinions become stronger
as a society we like to only be around people like us and with social media we are able to control that even more
define prejudice
preconceived negative judgement of an individual based on their group membership
define discrimination
the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of ethnicity, age, sex, or disability.
define stereotype
generalized belief on a group of people (can be positive or negitive)
what are the sources of prejudice?
what in implicit prejudice and why is it important?
a negative attitude, of which one is not consciously aware, against a specific social group. this is important because it is something we do not see. we need to work to search our self for the implicit views we may hold on someone
what is the implicit attitude test demonstration we did and how does it demonstrate a subtle prejudice?
what is privledge?
a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group
what is the impact of experiencing prejudice?
more information, higher cancer rates, poor sleep, more likely to suffer from depression and substance abuse, smaller babies and fetal mortality, and hypertension.
what is the impact of expressing prejudice?
you create a stereotyped belief. with that you become be ok with the poor treatment and discrimination of those you are prejudice toward.
what is racism?
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
personal vs systematic racism?
personal: an individual’s racist assumptions, beliefs, or behaviors believing one race is superior over another
systematic: systems assigning value and allocating opportunity based off of skin color
