Why is a grammar school different to other schools?
They choose their students depending on their ability through entrance tests.
What is meant by the term Marketisation?
The process by which the education system is run like a private business and became separated from the government, local authority, local council.
What is Endogenous Privatization?
Privatization within the education system where the education system begins to operate like a private business. e.g. Schools having a member of staff responsible for marketing.
What has Globalized education allowed?
Education is no longer restricted by physical presence:
1) Lockdown online learning - International uni students were engaged with courses while living in other countries.
2) MOOC’s & International online learning platforms (TED Talks).
What is Exogenous Privatisation?
Privatization of the education system from outside where private businesses deliver parts of the system that were previously state run. e.g. Private firms providing services like cleaning, ICT & HR.
What is an academy?
Independently managed and set up by sponsors such as businesses, faith groups or volunteer groups with the local authority.
What is Globalisation?
The interconnections and interdependence of countries on each other.
What is PISA?
A program for international student assessment which compares countries and helps make changes.
What is a specialist school?
Focuses on one or two subjects such as dance or acting.
What is the aim of a state-funded comprehensive school?
To educate all pupils, regardless of their background or ability.
What is meant by the term Privatization?
Services which were owned/run by the state are transferred to private companies.
What is a faith school?
A religiously run school.
What did the education reform act bring in to make the education system more competitive?
1) League tables - a set of statistics that compare exam results in schools.
2) National Curriculum - Made subjects compulsory meaning everyone learns the same thing.
3) Ofsted inspections - Scores based on the schools education etc.
4) Open enrollment - Parents can select their child’s school.
5) Formula Funding - Schools are given a certain amount of funding per student they have.
What is parentocracy?
Parents in ‘charge’ of the education system.
What schools get to set their own curriculum and admission policies?
Independent or Private schools.
