Social Perspectives & SDH Flashcards
Health gradient
the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and mortality or morbidity that normally shows a monotonic increase as SES changes from low to high.
Social inequality
being treated differently as a consequence of age, race, gender, disability, sexual preference or other attribute.
SDH according to WHO ?
“Health inequities arise from the societal conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, referred to as social determinants of health. These include early years’ experiences, education, economic status, employment and decent work, housing and environment, and effective systems of preventing and treating ill health”
WHO’s recommendations for addressing SDH?
- Improving the conditions of daily life (where people are born, grow, live, work, and age).
- Tackling the inequitable distribution of power, money, and resources (the structural drivers of those conditions of daily life – globally, nationally, and locally).
- Measuring the problem, evaluating action, expanding the knowledge base, developing a workforce that is trained in the social determinants of health, and raising public awareness about the social determinants of health.
