What is peer influence?
The pressure or influences we feel from our peer groups
What is Social learning theory?
How we learn our behvaiour from the peers and their role models
What is observational learning?
Involves a person watching the behaviour of role model and then imitating the behvaiour
There are 4 principles that have to be present during observational learning
What are the 4 principles of observational learning?
Attention, Retention, Reproduction and Motavation
The motivation to repeat an observed behaviour is determined by two main factors
Who is being observed: For the motivation to imitate the behaviour this should be a role model
Outcomes for the observed individual: Motivation is more likely if there is vicarious reinforcement
What is vicarious reinforcement?
It is when a person isn’t directly enforced, they simply observe person receiving positive reinforcement and it indirectly reinforces the person observing
How can social learning theory explain addictive behaviour?
If a person sees someone doing cocain and their peers praise them a person may be more inclined to do cocain more consistently to gain praise - reinforcement vicariously
What are social norms?
Social norms are behvaiours considered acceptable within a particular social group.
What’s a perceived social norm?
How a social norm is perceived a norm in society and this can influence behaviour and this perception could be distorted
What are the 2 types of social norms?
Descriptive and Injuctive
What’s a descriptive norm?
An individuals perception of how much others engage in behaviours, How much they believe other individuals believe everybody else is doing something and then use that as their norm
What is an injunctive norm?
What someone believes other’s approval of the behvaiour
How can descriptive norms be applied o addictive behvaiour?
Over estimate how much a person drinks alcohol for example
How can injunctive norms be applied to addictive behvaiour?
People may think others think its cool to engage in this behaviour
