Characteristics- Addiction Flashcards
What is an addiction?
An addiction is a repetitive behvaiour that process immidiate gratification during the short term but then can cause long-term disruption. This behaviour can increase the risk of disease and/or social &personal problems. The behaviour will continue to occour due to high relapse rates, due to lack of control
What’s the DSM classification of addiction?
-The most common addictions they classify as mental illness are chemical addictions and gambling
-It’s possible for a person to be addicted to anything, however although DSM is a great tool in diagnosing an addiction, its limited when diagnosing behavioural addiction
-Aside from gambling no other behvaioural addiction has a criteria for diagnosis
What’s Griffiths 2005 criteria for addiction?
Griffiths suggested that there are 6 criteria’s that are common to most types of addiction, behaviour and substance
-Sailence
-Mood Modification
-Tolerance
-Withdrawal symptoms
-Conflict
-Relapse
What is Salience?
When an addiction takes over a persons life, becoming the most important thing in a persons life, and when they are not engaging in the addiction, they are constantly thinking about it and when they will.
Eg. Smokers, when put in a situation where they can’t smoke, they will be constantly be thinking about when they can next smoke
What is mood modification?
Mood modification is when a person uses their addiction to change their mood, for example a person may intake nicotine to give them a boost, and then will intake nicotine to relax them on the evening
What is Tolerance?
Addicts will have to increase the amount of drug or behaviour in order to get the same effect, this is due to a built up tolerance
For example, a gambler may have to place higher bets in order to feel the same pleasant feeling they felt before
What are Withdrawl symptoms?
These are unpleasant feelings and physical effects that occur when an addict reduces the amount or stops the behaviour, these can be physical or psychological symptoms.
What is meant by conflict?
People with an addiction may develop inter personal conflicts and intrapsychic conflict. Continuously choosing a short term pleasure can lead to a disregard of more severe damages, which in turn increase need for the addictive activity as a coping strategy
What is relapse?
Addicts have a strong tendencies to return to the addictive behaviour Evan after years of being clean.
What’s Walter’s (1999) criteria?
He identified the 4 P’s
-Progression: higher tolerance and increased risk of withdrawal symptoms
-Preoccupation: unable to focus on anything other than the addiction
-Perceived loss of control
-Persistance despite long term negative consequences
