Social Learning Theory- Bandura Flashcards
What is social learning?
Social learning is learning through observation, imitation and modelling of another person or role model.
Bandura 4 stages of social learning theory

Reproduction
Motivation
Vicarious learning
Learning through other people being rewarded or punishment for their behaviour.
Bandura: Bobo doll
Children copied adults aggressive behaviour towards the doll. If the adults used a weapon the children were more likely to used weapons too.
Aim:
Albert Bandura aimed to see whether aggressive behaviour could be acquired through observation of aggressive models.
Procedure:
The study was a laboratory experiment using a matched pair design. 36 boys and girls aged 3-6 were selected from the Stanford university nursery.
Step 1: Children were all bought into a room and observed and played with the doll.
Step 2: Children were taken to another room and were deliberately frustrated by being shown shiny new toys.
Step 3: Finally the children were taken into a playroom with toys including the bobo doll. Behaviour was monitored
Findings:
Children who witnessed aggressive models were more likely to complete imitate aggression.
Conclusion:
Social behaviour such as aggression can be acquired by imitation of models. Imitation is more likely when the modelled behaviour is more gender typical.
