Social learning theory Flashcards
What is modelling?
1
- Individual (model) displays social behaviour in presence of another
What is observation?
1
- Active process, observer chooses to focus their attention on modelled behaviour and watch
What is imitation and when can behaviour be reproduced?
2
- Copying observed behaviour
- Once behaviour been observed and stored (when situation is appropriate)
What is vicarious reinforcement?
1
- Experienced when observer witnesses model being rewarded in some way for their behaviour, ^imitate
What is the process of social learning (if imitation takes place)?
4
1) Attention (to behaviour of model)
2) Retention (of observed behaviour) - store in mem
3) Reproduction (of behaviour in appropriate situation)
4) Motivation (to repeat behaviour because of vicarious reinforcement)
Evaluate social learning theory
3
Bandura showed children would imitate aggro model, who aggressed toward doll, especially if model same sex and rewarded (motivation). Pope showed chickens selectively imitate ^status same sex models in pecking a pad for food
Genetic factors. Kendler et al. found identical twins ^similar in lvl of aggro than non identical. Individual differences in social behaviour are genetically influenced and not product of previous modelling
Effect of media violence on aggro. Children may imitate aggro behaviour modelled in violent film and video games e.g. people blamed James B. murder on killer watched Child’s play 3
When are models most likely to be imitated?
1
- Observer identifies w model (admires them)
