social learning theory Flashcards
what is a social psychological theory ?
the cause of aggression is due to our interaction in society.
what does social learning theory say ?
behaviours can be learnt in two ways 1. directly through reinforcement or 2. indirectly by seeing others being rewarded
what are the four main conditions in SLT ?
attention, retention, motor reproduction and motivation,
What did Bandura believe ?
children learn aggressive behaviour through observation.
Banduras Bobo doll experiment ?
aim - was to demonstrate that if children were a witness to aggressive behaviour they would replicate the behaviour.
-36 boys and 36 girls split into three conditions.
children in the aggressive condition acted more aggressively towards the bobo doll compared to those in the non aggressive group.
-boys where more aggressive then girls.
weaknesses ?
cannot be generalised as they where all from a university nursery.
lacks ecological validity
ethics= children may have become distressed.
strengths ?
lab experiment = the variables can be controlled, minimising extraneous variables.
support for SLT ?
philips - found that daily homocide rates in the US increased following a major boxing match.
IDA ?
ethical issues make it difficult to test experimentally .
