what is deindividuation ?
the loss of a persons sense of identity and individuality , this can happen in two ways the first becoming part of the crowd and second identifying to a particular role.
what is the process of deindividuation ?
social norms inhibit anti social behaviour,
inhibitions removed when deindividuated,
conditions that increase anonymity weaken barriers to anti social behaviour.
zimbardo’s experiment ?
aim - was to test the idea of deindividuation and its link to aggression .
-the participants where female undergraduate who where put into two conditions. Zimbardo found that the group which had been deindividuated where more likely to shock the actors.
strengths ?
lab environment so can be replicated and variables controlled.
weaknesses?
sample cannot be generalised because it was all undergraduate women.

- prentice and Dunn found that deindividuation could lead to prosocial or antisocial behaviour depending on the situation.
- postmes and spears- found that disinhibition and anti social behaviour are not common in large groups and anuonymous setting.

gender bias - Cannavale found that male and female groups responded differently under deindividuation .
