Social learning theory Flashcards
Define Social Learning Theory (SLT)
Learning by watching and then copying
Who developed SLT? Why?
Albert Bandura to address the issue of the behaviourist approach not taking into account mental processes in learning
Define vicarious reinforcement
Reinforcement of behaviours not directly experienced but occur through observation
Define imitation
The copying of behaviours
State the four mediational processes
Attention, Retention, Motor reproduction, Motivation
What are the four mediational processes?
1) The extent to which we notice behaviours
2) How well the behaviours are remembered
3) The ability of the observer to perform the behaviour
4) The will to perform the behaviour
Define mediational processes
Cognitive factors that influence learning and come between stimulus and response
Define modelling
Imitating the behaviour of a role model
What makes a role model?
- Similar characteristics
- Attractiveness
- High status
What was the aim of the Bobo Doll experiment?
To see whether children would imitate aggressive behaviour
What were the results of the Bobo Doll experiment?
Children who observed an aggressive role model were more likely to show the same specific acts of violence shown by the model.
What was the conclusion of the Bobo Doll experiment?
Children do imitate behaviours of models beyond the specific situation where the behaviour is viewed.
What was different about the Bandura and Walters experiment compared to the Bobo doll experiment?
The children watched videos instead and role models were praised, reprimanded or had no consequences.
