What are the key assumptions of the Humanistic approach?
1) Humans have free will and not all behaviour is determined
2) All individuals are unique and are motivated to achieve their potential
3) A proper understanding of human behaviour can only be achieved by studying humans
Define free will
The idea that we have choice over how we act
Why do human psychologists hate science?
Science contradicts the basic ideas of the humanistic approach
What does it mean to be “self-determining”?
Having the power or freedom to control your own life (e.g Free will)
What is determinism?
All events are regarded as caused external to the will
What is Holism?
Parts of a whole cannot exist independently from the whole?
What did Abraham Maslow do and why?
Create the hierarchy of needs as a way for employers to get the best out of their employees by understanding their needs

Air, Water, Food, Drink, Warmth, Sleep, Sex

Protection, Security, Stability, Order, Rules, Law
What are some examples of belonging and love needs?
Family, Affection, Relationships, Work groups
What are examples of some self-esteem needs?
Achievement, Status, Responsibility
What are some examples of cognitive needs?
Ability to think for ourselves , Solve problems
What are some examples of aesthetic needs?
Appreciation of beauty, Prettiness
