Social Learning Theory Flashcards
What is social learning theory?
The idea that people learn behaviours by observing role models.
Identification
Where an observer associates themselves with a role model and wants to be like them.
Vicarious reinforcement
Learning through observing the consequences of others’ actions
Mediational processes
The cognitive factors in learning which include attention, retention, reproduction and motivation.
Attention
Noticing the behaviour of others
retention
Remembering what they observed
Motivation
The desire to perform the behaviour, influenced by whether it was rewarded or punished
Motor reproduction
Being able to perform the behaviour they witnessed
What is the main experiment for SLT?
Bandura et al (1961) or Bandura Bobo doll
What was the aim of Bandura’s experiment?
observational learning - how watching other people influences behaviour without conditioning
What did the experiment include?
-Bandura placed an adult in the room with a child and bobo doll.
-The adult displayed aggressive behaviour on the doll (verbal and physical) while the child watched.
- The children then imitated the aggressive behaviour, showing similar actions

Key finding of experiment
- Girls showed more physical aggression when the model was male, but more verbal if female.
- Boys were more likely to imitate same-sex models than girls.
