Social learning theory Flashcards
main assumptions of SLT
- behaviour is learnt from experience
— people learn through observation and imitation of models - learning can occur through vicarious reinforcement (observing others and the consequences of their actions)
- observational learning could not occur without mediational processes
main study to support SLT
banduras bobo doll
what is SLT
observational learning
what is observation
what is imitation
what is identification
what is vicarious reinforcement
what is modelling
what are mediational processes
what are the four mediational processes
- Attention- extent to which a behaviour is noticed
- Rétention- how well behaviour is remembered
- Motor reproduction- ability of observer to perform behaviour
- Motivation - the will to perform the behaviour , often based off of whether the behaviour was rewarded or punished
Outline of Banduras Bobo doll study
• Lab experiment - artificial setting
• 72 American children
• 48 observed adult model - 24 observed violent model, 24 observed non violent
• Final 24 observed no model
• Taken to room with toys and no model
• Behaviour observed
Findings of Banduras study
• Those who experienced violent models were likely to produce violent behaviour
• boys more likely to show physical aggression / girls more likely to show verbal
Conclusion of Banduras study
experiment demonstrated that children are able to learn certain behaviours such as aggression through observation learning, through watching the behaviour of someone else
A03 of SLT
• Évidence to support - bobo doll study
• Bobo doll was designed to be kicked so could be an experiment on obedience
• Less reductionist - mediational processes
• Deterministic - other factors could cause behaviour aside from cognitive and environmental
