Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Assumptions
Bandura agreed that behaviour is learned through experience however proposed that behaviour is learned through imitation of others behaviour.
Focuses on the mental processes involved in learning
Mediation all processes are cognitive factors that influence learning and come between stimulus and response.
Mediational processes
Attention - forming a mental representation of the behaviour
Retention- storing the observed behaviour in the long term memory
Reproduction- must be able to reproduce the behaviour
Motivation- individuals must expect to receive the same positive reinforcement for imitating the observed behaviour.
Bobo doll study 1961 bandura
-lab experiment
-sample of 36 girls and 36 boys all between ages of 3-6
-group one 12 girls 12 boys shown the model hitting the doll and shouting at the doll
- group two 12 girls 12 boys shown a non aggressive model
-group three 12 girls 12 boys not shown a model
Taken to a room with toys told not to play with them- aggressive arousal
Taken individually to a room with a bobo doll
Group one more likely to be aggressive than the children from the other two groups
Boys imitated more aggressively than boys
This supports slt
Bandura 1963
Group one model praised
Group two model punished
Group three no consequences for aggressive behaviour
Group one showed the most aggression group two showed the least.
Applications
Used to explain the influence of media on behaviour used in the court case of bulgers murder
evaluation positives
-Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is widely used in health and social work as a framework for assessing clients’ needs.
-Client-centered therapy is widely used in health, social work, and industry. This therapy has helped many people overcome difficulties they face in life, which is a significant contribution to improving people’s quality of life.
-proposes a positive view of human nature
-more valid because holistic
-recognises both nature and nurture
evaluation negatives
- non scientific methodology therefore cannot be repeated so research is less reliable
-individualistic therefore can be seen as self obsessive - incoherent between determinism and free will. behaviour caused by free will but also determined by childhood factors.
- cultural bias in the hierarchy more westernised individualism.
- positive outlook may not be realistic and hard to achieve
