Q

How can Social Identity Theory explain gang violence?

A
  • The individuals might have undergone social categorisation based on where they live and the postcode of that area they represent has a gang
  • The different gangs have hold different values and beliefs such as one gang may been a motorcycle gang while the other is a street violent gang and these opposing values lead to violence
  • One gang may view themselves as the more superior gang as they may of sold more drugs or stabbed more people compared to the other gang, positive distinctiveness, due to this the gang may treat the outgroup as negative or unfavourable terms

Q

How can Realistic Conflict Theory explain gang violence?

A
  • The two gangs might be in competition over who has the best reputation in the neighbourhood and this competition leads to violence
  • The two gangs may be competing over the same area however only one gang can run the area at one time, so there is conflict of interest as one gang can run and who is in charge of and this leads to increase prejudice between the two groups
  • The two gangs may be competition for certain limited resources such as drugs and customers to buy the drugs as drugs is a limited resource
