What did the government do
Aid - diets case identified in 1981- gay men were particular at risk.
The government started a prevention campaign in 1985, leaflets were distributed to all house holds and schools. Tv and radio advised people “don’t die of ignorance”

Ban of homosexuals in the armed forces and unequal age of consent was challenged.
The age of consent went from 21 to 18 in 1994. However equality wasn’t established until 2000. And it wasn’t till 2000 till it was legal in the army.

Feared for the future of marriages as the divorce rates hit high records in 1990. And the number of babies being born into unmarried family’s doubled from 12% in 1980 to 30% in the 90s.
Single mothers and absent fathers were a crisis.
Peter lilley, the sec of social security sang a song to the Conservative party conference including the words “there’s young ladies getting pregnant just to jump the housing queue. And dads who won’t support there kids of ladies they have kissed”
- 1993- child support agency to ensure that absent partners paid maintenance for their children.

Concern about under age sex.
Campaign stood against the availability of contraceptive advice to girls under the age of consent, without heir parents knowledge. In 1985 the law that advice could only be given with the consent of partners was overruled.

How was there changing attitudes in regards to the royal family
Period of 1887 to 1997 was a difficult one for the monarchy. The marriages of 3/4 of the queens children broke down. Details of extramarital affairs including recordings of telephone conversations were splashed out over the tabloids.
Debates led tot the queen paying tax on her private income and a reduction in the civil list.
When the princess of Wales died in a car crash the queen was accused of not caring while the country was mourning.

Challenged ideas about what art was. They created art from materials that wasn’t usually used like dead animals.

Late 80s acid dance house music with an edge arrived from the USA. seeing in explosion in rage and free parties linked with ecstasy which provoked a moral panic about drug taking.
- passed the criminal justice and public order act in 1994 which gave more powers to the police to break up these free parties.

Started on the m3 extension in 1992 and spread to other sites such as the m11 link roads. A wide range of people, middle class, new age travellers campaigned against road development. Including chaining and climbing themselves to trees.

Seen in 1990s. A step forward from second wave feminism from 1960s. It was broader than just legal and financial equalities, it was about breaking down women stereotypes on race, gender and sexuality. Female bands such as buggy bear sang about feminist issues. By 1990 the idea of girl power led by the spice girls began a main street one.
- her position as pm showed that women could achieve high. Geri from the spice girls described her as “the First Lady of girl power”.
- she only had one female cabinet minister and did nothing to encourage other women in parliament she said herself “I owe nothing to women’s lib” in a 1982 interview.

However what were the positives
How was it not all positive?
People were becoming more comfortable with multiculturalism however in 1991 and 1992 there were riots across towns and cities from oxford to Newcastle. Mainly involving young white men on deprived council estates.

- in 1992 black conservative john Taylor lost to the liberal dems - rumours of racism from some conservative MPs
- still concerns of black people and the police the case of Stephan Lawerence.
