Between 1997 and 2007 what did Britain want to use their position in the world to do
Build a diplomatic bridge between Europe and America, this only had partial success and relations between Britain, the USA and Europe were strained by the Cold War and the balkans.

To develop a new, more positive relationship with its European partners.

He had a high personal standing and good rel with other European leaders. Blair was also enthusiastic about the possibility of Britain joining the European currency the euro.
Brown was less keen on joining the Euro

Turkey, Croatia, Serbia and the Ukraine. Started to be question how much Britain would be at the heart of Europe knowing that states of the ussr were bound to play a prominent role.

Liberal interventionism ( a country should intervene in another country for liberal aims ) to prevent to recurrence of massacres and ethnic cleansing that had been seen in the Yugoslavian civil war.

Why did Blair get involved in the Yugoslavia civil war
In 1999 a prolonged NATO bombing campaign against Serbia forced milosevic into pulling his forced out of Kosovo.
In 2000 when rebel forces in the civil war in Sierra Leone threatened to take over the capital city Freetown the British government sent armed forces.
What happened as a result of 9/11
NATO forces prepared to invade Afghanistan where the Taliban government had allowed al Qaeda to use the county as a base for training and planning terrorist operations.
7th October 2001 Britain joined the USA in a military campaign to over throw the Taliban and expel al Qaeda from Afghanistan.
The leaders of the Taliban managed to escape.
What was the fear with Iraq in 2002
That they might link up with Al Qaeda and provide a new basis for terrorism.
Invasion of Iraq was launched. Y American forces and backed by Britain, Poland and Italy amongst others.
Military victory was achieved in 2003. But British troops found themselves bogged down in a long struggle.
