SOCIAL - INTRO TO SOCIAL/KEY WORDS Flashcards
what is obedience?
->in society, obedience is often expected
–>obedience is the tendency to comply with the commands of those in authority
–>eg. a student is obedient to a teacher at school
what is moral strain?
->when we disagree with what is being asked of us, we experience moral strain
–>we use defence mechanisms such as denial or avoidance to deal with emotional conflict
–>eg. Milgram’s ppts showed moral strain: sweating, trembling, nervous laughter
what is dissent?
->dissent is when a person disagrees with the action of authority, but may not disobey
–>it is the first step towards disobedience
–>eg. many of Milgram’s ppts dissented and said they didn’t want to continue but did anyway
what is resistance/disobedience?
->resistance is where the person receiving the order from the authority figure chooses not to obey
–>resistance is resisting the pressure of authority and acting in a way that you feel is right
–>eg. in Milgram’s study, 35% of ppts showed independent behaviour by refusing to go to 450V
