had participants estimate movement of light (over several days) also no clear right answer
Results:
-participants matched estimates to align w/group
-example of development of group norms
-group norm judgments happened even when participants were alone (private acceptance)
aschers study
soloman asch
shown line and have to guess what line matches it on different card (had clear correct answer)
results:
-conformed to groups answered to be accepted (normative social influence)
milgrams obedience study
had teacher and learner, and teacher would shock learner. Wanted to see how much people would shock other.
Results:
-social situation effects obedience
Why did people obey in milligrams study?
- authority figure present
- release of responsibility (someone else responsible)
- step by step situation (slippery slope)
stanford prison study
philip zimbardo
set up mock prison w/students. Half prisoners half guards. After a few days students took on their roles and experiment had to be stopped b/c became so extreme.
