What is obedience?
A form of social influences in which an individual follows a direct order. The person issue sing the order is usually a figure of authority.
Milgram’s research: Aim
To test the hypothesis. “Germans are different” Something about German society made them obedient to a malevolent authority figure.
To investigate the situational factors that lead to obedience.
Milgram’s research: procedure
40 American men volunteered to take part in a study, supposedly about memory. When each volunteer arrived they were introduced to another ppts, inn which they had to be the learner. The draw was fixed so pp which they had to be the learner. The draw was fixed so pppts would always be the teacher and the confederates were leaners would always be the teacher and the confederates were learns.
The learner had to Rember pairs of words, each time they had made an error the teacher had to deliver a stranger (fake) electric shocks. Once the shock had been given the learner would scream in pain. Once the teacher got to 300 volts the learner pounded on the wall and didn’t responded to the next question.
