Conformity
Yielding to group pressure. It is also known as ‘majority influence’. It is the result of an indirect order
Compliance
Publicly, but NOT privately going along with majority influence to gain approval & avoid ridicule
This is temporary and only shown in presence of the group
Internalisation
aka true conformity - public & private acceptance of majority influence, through adoption of the majority group’s belief system
Stronger, permanent form of conformity, as it is maintained outside of the groups’s presence
Identification
Public & private acceptance of majority influence in order to gain group acceptance.
Stronger form of conformity, but still temporary - ppl conform to the opinion of the group without necessarily agreeing to them
