what is the definition of conformity?
a change in a person’s behaviour or opinions because of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
who created the types of conformity?
kelman (1958)
what are the three types of conformity?
compliance
identification
internalisation
what is compliance?
a superficial and temporary type of conformity where we outwardly go along with the majority view, but privately disagree with it.
what is identification?
a moderate form of conformity where we act the same as the group because we share their values and want to be accepted. the change of belief/ behaviour is often temporary.
what is internalisation?
a deep type of conformity where a person conforms publicly and privately because they have internalised and accepted the views of the group.

what are the two types of explanations?
informational social influence
normative social influence.
what is informational social influence?
desire to be right and occurs when a person is unsure of a situation or lacks knowledge - internalisation.
what is normative social influence?
behaviour is temporary and the views change both publicly and privately.
