compliance
a person changes their public behaviour, the way they act but not their private beliefs. usually short term change and if often a result of normative social influence
internalisation
a person changes their public behaviour and their private beliefs. usually a long term change and often a result of informational social influecne
identifictaion
a person changes their public behaviour and their private behaviour, but only while they are in the presence of group. usually short term change and normally the result of normative social influence
informative social influence
the desire to be right- when we conform because were are unsure of the situation or lack of knowledge, so we look to others we believe may have more information than us
normative social influence
the desire to be liked- when we conform to fit in with the group because we dont want to appear foolish or be left out
unanimity
everyone agrees- when it comes to opinion its the opposite of agreement.
situational variables
factors in the environment that can unintentionally affect the results of a study
proximity
the physical closeness or distance of an authority figure to the person they are giving an order to
autonomous state
individual makes their own decisions based upon their beliefs and considers themselves to be responsible for their own actions
dispositional explanation
any explanation of behaviour that highlights the importance of the individuals personality
legitimacy to authority
explanation of obedience which is we are more likely to obey a person who has a higher position or status in a social hierarchy
resistance to social influence
the ability of people to withstand the social pressure to conform to the majority or to obey authority
locus of control
concept concerned with internal control vs external control
consistency
which minority influence is more likely to occur if the minority members share the same belief and retain it over time
locus of control
refers to the sense we each have about what directs events in our lives.
