Social Influence Flashcards
Consistency
The minority must remain firm and unchanging in their message to be influential
Commitment
Demonstrating dedication to a cause sometimes through personal sacrifice, increases influence
Deeper processing
The cognitive engagement and critical thinking teat an individual applies non evaluating a message, belief, or behaviour. This occurs when people actively consider the arguments presented, analyse the implications, and question their own viewpoints rather than accepting information passively.
Flexibility
The minority should be willing to compromise and adapt rather than appearing rigid
Snowball effect
The process where a small minority gradually gains more support until it becomes the majority
Confusion
A deep internal change in beliefs, caused by minority influence ( often permanent )
Internalization
When people genuinely accept the minority view as their own.
Augmentation principle
When a minority makes sacrifices their influence becomes more powerful
Social cryptomnesia
When people adopt a new social norm, but forget the original source of the change
