Social Influence Flashcards
Conformity can be defined as..
the tendency of individuals to adjust their behaviours, attitudes or beliefs to align with a particular group. This adjustment be due to real or imagined pressure and can be motivated by a desire to fit in (normative social influence) or to be correct (informational social influence)
What are the 3 types of conformity from highest to lowest?
• Internalisation
• Identification
• Compliance
Internalisation is..
a deep, genuine change in beliefs that persists both privately and publicly. This is the strongest type of conformity and often occurs as a result of informational social influence
Identification can be defined as..
a temporary/short term change to conform with a group’s expectations or values, that only occur in the presence of a group.
Compliance is. ..
when an individual conforms to others’ ideas, beliefs and actions to gain approval or avoid disappointment. This is a superficial and temporary change in behaviour occurring as a result of normative social influence. The individual may publicly agree but privately disagree, thus it is the weakest level of conformity
