Social Influence Flashcards
conformity- Asch-
two limitations?
- ARTIFICIAL TASK. Fiske (2014), cannot be applied to todays society.
- NOT GENERALISABLE. individualistic vs collectivist, white American males
conformity- Asch-
one strength?
RESEARCH SUPPORT. Todd Lucas (2006) supports Aschs study
Conformity- zimbardo-
What are two strengths?
- CONTROL. All pps were tested on things such as mental stability. This rules out individual differences.
- UNBIASED. The role of the pps, coin flip chose if pps was a prisioner or guard.
Conformity- zimbardo-
What are two limitations?
- LACKS REALISM. Banvaziz and Movahedi, based on bias study as “cool hand luke”,
- EXAGGERATION OF FINDINGS. Only one third of guards conformed to the aim, many resisted conformity.
Obedience- Milgrim-
What are two strengths?
- RESEARCH SUPPORT. Beauvoir (2012), french tv show, 80% of pps, deliver the maximum shock to an unconscious man.
- STUDIES THE AGENTIC STATE OF OBEDIENCE. Most pps resisted giving shocks until they were sure they wouldn’t be responsive for any harm
Obedience- Milgrim-
Two limitations?
- LOW INTERNAL VALIDITY. 75% believed the shocks were real, Orne and Holland agreed the pps were play acting.
- ALTERNATIVE INTERPRETATION OF FINDINGS. Haslam (2014), showed pps obeyed first three prompt, but disobeyed the fourth one. Only obeyed when they identified with the course of the research.
Obedience- Adorno-
A strength?
RESEARCH SUPPORT. The 20 most obedience people in Milgrims study scored the highest on the F-scale, compared to those who were disobedient
Obedience- Adorno-
What are two limitations?
- LIMITED EXPLANATION. Millions of individuals in pre-war germany were extremely obedient, racist, and anti-semantic. It is unlikely they all had APs.
- POLITICAL BIAS. Chrisle and Jahoda (1954), argued it was political biased as extreme right wing and extreme left wing have a lot in common.
Resistance to social influence-
What are two strengths?
- RESEARCH SUPPORT. Asch- conformity decreased in the presence of a descender. Gameson- repeated Milgrims study was repeated, found lower levels of obedience where the pps were in groups, 88% were disobedient.
- RESEARCH SUPPORT. Albercht- (2006), shows how pregnant teens were more likely to results the conformity to smoke if they had a ‘buddy’
Minority influence-
Two strengths?
- EVIDENCE DEMONSTRATING THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSISTENCY. Moscovici (blue/green slides study), consistent minority is more important than inconsistent minority. Wood, conducted meta analysis, 100 similar studies, found consistent was most influential,
- RESEARCH SUPPORT FOR DEEPER PROCESSING. Martin, presented a message supporting a particular viewpoint, measured peoples agreement. Group 1 (minority agreed), group 2 (majority agreed). They were then exposed to contradicting view, less willing to change their views when they listened to a minority.
Minority influence-
A limitation?
ARTIFICIAL TASKS. Moscovici, judged the colour of slides, which is far removed from how minorities actually work, for example jury decisions,
Social change-
What are two strengths?
- RESEARCH SUPPORT FOR NORMATIVE INFLUENCES. Nolan
- MINORITY INFLUENCE EXPLAINS CHANGE. Nementh.
Social change-
What is one limitation?
ROLE OF DEEPER PROCESSING. Supposedly converted because as they think more deeply about minorities views. Mackie.
Resistance to social influence- LOC-
One strength?
RESEARCH SUPPORT TO LINK BETWEEN LOC AND RESISTANCE TO OBEDIENCE.
Holland (1967)- repeated milgrims study and assessed whether people were internals and externals. 37% of internals did not go the highest level, only 23% externals did not continue.
Resistance to social influence- LOC-
One limitation?
CONTRADICTORY RESEARCH.
Twenge (2004)- analysed data from American LOC studies conducted over a 40 year period. People became more resident to social influence but also more external, we would expect people to become more internal.
