Two strengths?

A
  • EVIDENCE DEMONSTRATING THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSISTENCY. Moscovici (blue/green slides study), consistent minority is more important than inconsistent minority. Wood, conducted meta analysis, 100 similar studies, found consistent was most influential,
  • RESEARCH SUPPORT FOR DEEPER PROCESSING. Martin, presented a message supporting a particular viewpoint, measured peoples agreement. Group 1 (minority agreed), group 2 (majority agreed). They were then exposed to contradicting view, less willing to change their views when they listened to a minority.

What are two strengths?

A

SOCIAL INFLUENCE SUGGESTED BY PSYCHOLOGISTS DO WORK.
Nolan (2008)- aimed to see if they can change peoples energy use habits. Hung messages on peoples doors in San-Diego, every week for one month. The message was that ‘most individuals were trying to reduce energy’. For control, someone had different messages. Significant decrease in the compare group.

CAN EXPLAIN HOW MINORITY INFLUENCE BRINGA ABOUT CHANGE.

Q

Social change-
What is one limitation?

A

NO ROLE OF DEEPER PROCESSING.
Mackie (1987)- believes that there is no deeper processing, in social change. Showed evidence saying that majority influence causes deeper processing if you do not share their views. This is because we like to believe that other people share our views.
