what is identification
a form of influence where an individual accepts/adopts an attitude/behaviour because they want to be associated with a particular person or a group
what is compliance
when an individual is exposed to the views or actions of the majority, they change their views to fit in - they automatically go along with the minority without analysing why there is a difference
- results in public compliance without private attitude change
what is internalisation
when an individual is exposed to views of a group, they validate or examine their own beliefs and convince themselves that they’re wrong and that the group is right.
what does internalisation lead to
- leads to both public and private acceptance of the groups beliefs - they internalise the beliefs, producing attitude change
what is informational social influence
when people conform because they are uncertain about what to do in the situation so they look to others for confirmation
what does informational social influence lead to

what is normative social influence
when someone conforms in order to fit in and gain approval or to avoid disapproval from other members - they must believe they are under surveillance by the group
